Bespoke vs Made to Measure vs Made to Order

Choosing your wedding dress isn’t just about how it looks, it’s about how it comes together, and how that process feels along the way. The terms bespoke, made to measure, and made to order get used a lot in bridal, often interchangeably. But they each offer a very different experience for Brides.

Here’s a clearer, more relaxed way to think about it and we’ve broken it down in to the different services we offer here from the JB studio.

Bespoke/ Custom - Designed entirely around you

Bespoke & custom refers to a process whereby a design is created, tested & produced entirely around you. It begins with you - your ideas, your references, your instincts and builds outward from there.

This process is a very creative & personal one whereby our Brides will work closely with Designer, Jessica. There will be sketching, fabric sourcing, and a toile fitting early on. A toile is a mockup version of your proposed design, usually made in plain basic cloth, that allows you to see the design on your body and try our the style and silhouette. It allows us to make any markings and alterations needed to the fit and style on the plain cloth and these are then transferred to your pattern before cutting out your final fabrics. From this stage things evolve. A neckline might soften, a sleeve might appear, proportions shift slightly as the dress starts to take on its own rhythm and you the Bride are very much at the center of that decision making process.

It’s less about choosing and more about discovering the dress as you go. The process is slower, more intuitive, and rooted in the traditions of craftmanship & couture—where the fit, the feel, and the finish are everything.

Bespoke suits brides who don’t just want something beautiful—they want something that feels entirely their own, this process is best for Brides who have vision and who thrive off creativity & creative decisions.

Made to Measure

Offered on all our pieces when ordered via our Liverpool studio. Made to measure starts with an existing design, one of our core line pieces, something you’ve already tried on & fallen for and as it is made for you and to your measurements, it gently reshapes around your body.

Your measurements are taken, and the pattern is adjusted so the dress fits more precisely than standard sizing. We can offer small flexibility in design, i.e. different straps/ sleeve length/ adjusted neckline or train length.

It’s a quieter kind of personalisation. You’re not reinventing the dress, but you are making sure it works for you, not just on a hanger. Our brides will go through a series of fitting with us (2-3) with your final fit being as close to your wedding date as possible to ensure that perfect fit.

Made to Order / Ready to Wear

Made to order is the process that applies to our ready to wear collection& when ordering JB from a selected stockist. You try on the sample garment, choose your size, and the dress is made accordingly. The design itself doesn’t change, and the fit isn’t built from scratch, so once it arrives, alterations are usually needed to fine-tune things like length or shape.

It is the quickest and most budget-conscious option and perfect for our Brides wanting a simple and streamlined process. No overthinking, no long lead times, just a dress you love, made and delivered.
